Recovery, Un-Dissociated & Decolonized:
Adapting ACA Recovery for Complex Trauma

Twelve-Step Recovery has saved countless lives. For many of us who survived complex trauma, it has also left us stranded. We were told to surrender when surrender was what kept us trapped. We were handed a Higher Power that looked too much like the people who hurt us. We were asked to share in rooms that did not feel safe, with parts of us who were never invited to the meeting.

Recovery, Un-Dissociated starts where survivors need to start: with Step Zero, Safety, a place we can return to anytime. From there, Dr. Emma Sunshaw walks through each of the Twelve Steps of Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families, reimagined for people living with dissociation and the long aftermath of childhood harm. Each chapter offers the step applied in our own voice.

This book honors the history of recovery while decolonizing, making room for every part of the internal system, every faith or none and all the harm in between, and every survivor who has ever felt like the exception in a room full of rules.

You belong here. All of you.
